Bottom Line
The Kodak HERO 7.1 All-in-One Printer leans more towards home than office needs, but it can easily serve in the dual role of home and light-duty home office printer. It prints, scans, copies, sends email, and lets you print through the cloud.
The Kodak HERO 7.1 All-in-One Printer is a prime example of a multi-function printer (MFP) that earns points not because of its printing, but because of its features. As a printer, it's actually a little disappointing, with slow speed and slightly subpar text and graphics quality. But the speed and quality are both good enough for most purposes, and the features make it appropriate for a home MFP or the dual role of home and light-duty home office MFP.
In some ways, the HERO 7.1 is the mirror image of the Editors' Choice Brother MFC-J825DW ($150 street, 4 stars), which can also serve for home and home office, but leans more towards office needs, with a fax capability and an automatic document feeder (ADF), two important office-centric features that you won't find in the HERO 7.1
Among the features the HERO 7.1 offers are both Ethernet and WiFi support for easy sharing, the ability to print and scan even over a network, print in duplex (on both sides of the page), work as a standalone copier and direct email sender, and scan to a memory card or USB memory key. The paper tray holds only 100 sheets, which is what limits the printer to light-duty printing even in the context of a home office, but there's also a second tray for photo paper, so you don't have to swap out paper to switch between documents and photos. The photo tray can hold 40 sheets of 4-by-6 or 5-by-7 inch photo paper.

Photocentric features include the ability to print directly from PictBridge cameras, memory cards, and USB memory keys. As you might expect, you can preview photos on cards and memory keys on the 3.5-inch color LCD before printing. What you might not expect is that the LCD is also a touch screen that doubles as a self-explanatory, easy to use control panel.
Still More Features
Less common features the HERO 7.1 offers include a utility that can capture a video frame and print it and another utility that will create an anaglyphic 3D color image (the kind that needs glasses with one red lens and one blue lens to see the 3D effect). To print a 3D image, you need two photos of the same scene, and you need to move the camera about three inches horizontally between snapping the two pictures. The utility overlays the images and prints them. To let you see the 3D effect, Kodak provides two pairs of glasses with the printer.
Still another unusual, but welcome, touch is built-in support for Google Cloud Print and Kodak Email Print, which is essentially an extension to Google Cloud Print. Assign the printer an email address through Kodak Email Print, and you can print to it from any computer, smartphone, or other device that can send email. Simply create a message, attach the document you want printed, and send it. You don't even need to turn on your computer, thanks to the printer having its own email address, although the printer has to be connected to your network, with your network connected to the Internet.
Speed and Quality Speed and output quality are good enough to be usable, but not impressive. For my tests, I connected the printer to a wired network and installed the drivers and software on a Windows Vista system. On our business applications suite (using QualityLogic's hardware and software for timing) the HERO 7.1 came in at a lackadaisical 2.7 pages per minute (ppm), significantly slower than the Brother MFC-J825DW at 4.0 ppm, and a bit slower than either the HP Photosmart Plus e-All-in-One ($149, 4 stars) at 3.2 ppm or the Kodak ESP Office 2170 All-in-One Printer ($149.99 direct, 4 stars) at 3.0 ppm.
Photo speed was also slow, averaging 1 minute 37 seconds for a 4 by 6. It's worth mention, however, that the driver includes a warning that the Advanced Dot Placement mode that I chose for best quality will slow down the printer. Even in that mode, the HERO 7.1 was faster than the MFC-J825DW, at 1:59, but it was much slower than Kodak's own ESP Office 2170, at 42 seconds.

Output quality was a touch below par for both text and graphics. However, you shouldn't have any complaints about the text unless you have an unusual need for small fonts. Graphics were good enough for any internal business use, but showed banding in default mode, making them a poor choice for handing out to, say, a potential client or customer when you want to convey a sense of professionalism.
Photos were absolutely par for an inkjet MFP overall, with most color photos looking better than what you would expect from typical drugstore prints, but black and white output showing an obvious tint. This won't matter if you're concerned only with color photos, but will be a serious issue if you need to print in black and white.
One last important strength for the HERO 7.1 is a low claimed cost per page, at 2.8 cents for a black and white page and 8.2 cents for a color page. The savings isn't as important as it would be for a faster printer with higher paper capacity, which you'd probably be using to print more pages, but any savings is welcome.
With or without the savings, if you need to print high-quality text and graphics at fast speed, or you need an ADF or fax capability, the HERO 7.1 is clearly the wrong choice. But if you'll be satisfied with speed and output quality for text and graphics that's good enough most purposes, care more about the reasonably high photo quality, and need some or all of the long list of features from printing through the cloud to scanning to and printing from a USB key, the Kodak HERO 7.1 is a potentially attractive choice. It's certainly a reasonable one.
